Podcast Companion, July 11: Several Short Topics, and Lots of Fighting About Pizza

Hi everyone!  No real theme or purpose to the episode today, but sometimes, that's how we do our best work.  We cover a funny story about something HILARIOUS that Nate did, seriously LEGENDARY prank.  We tell of our first experience with Peruvian BBQ chicken, at the terrific Mario's Peruvian Chicken, and Jesse gets on his soapbox and gets all preachy.  The guys have a long and hilarious argument about pizza.  (Well, we suppose that's subjective.  You know how sometimes, you're watching some really weird, out-there comedy troupe, like Monty Python, or an especially trippy episode of Kids in the Hall, and it's not really making you laugh, but you can tell it was really funny for them?  It's like that.)  Lastly, the guys do a deep dive on fish cookery, aiming to demystify it for beginners.

Salchipapas

Okay, the one thing we have to report on here is that while we were discussing the food at Mario's, we talked about the delicious salchipapas, a ridiculous stoner-food monstrosity (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) consisting of french fries, hot dogs, mayo, mustard, catchup, and chile sauce.  Our questions were the following.  First, is this a real thing?  Like, are there other restaurants that have it?  Or is this just a Mario's thing?  (It's important to contemplate.  We'd hate for a visitor to our culture judge our cuisine based on the Double-Down, or Doritos-Crunch tacos.)  And second, hot dogs?  Really?

Well, gentle reader, the answer to the first question is yeah, this is totally a real thing!  It's a street food, but it's legit.  We're glad of it.  It's a happier world, with shit like this in it.  The answer to the second question is inconclusive.  We found a website that discusses salchipapas, and it just calls for 'beef sausage.'  Hot dogs are, in fact, that, but the ones in the pics we found looked a little more coarse-grained.  We wonder if maybe the genuine article uses a less American sausage, but Mario just uses hot dogs because that's what he can get for cheap.  Nothing wrong with that.

At any rate, we are all about it, because we back hot dogs, ride or die.  We were just wondering what a salchipapas looks like if you order one on the streets of Lima.

Anyway, check out this page on Taste Atlas, there's some great photos and a recipe.
